Sleepy Vikings: The ride’s been fast and furious for the Sleepy Vikings who have taken their road show to epicenters of cool both north (Toronto for North by Northeast) and south (Athens GA for Popfest). Recently signed to New Grenada Records, the band was named as one of the four best artists (out of 650) at NXNE by Paste Magazine, scored a showcase at CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, and in 2011 debuts as an official SXSW act. Sleepy Vikings are playing the New Grenada Showcase on Saturday, March 19 at the Ghost Room (304 W 4th St) in Austin.

Poetry ‘ n Lotion: Making their SXSW debut with an official showcase in 2011, “the instrumental foursome has evolved their old-meets-new brand of acoustic jazz and bluegrass into a plugged-in sound that incorporates elements of hard, psychedelic and progressive rock, roots reggae, samba, gypsy jazz, ragtime, and even Irish folk music” (Creative Loafing, Leilani Polk, 01/10). Date, time and venue for their official SXSW showcase will be available soon.

Have Gun, Will Travel: Tampa Bay’s ambassadors of Americana, Have Gun, Will Travel recently released their first ever music video (watch the video here). The song “Salad Days” is featured on Have Gun, Will Travel’s most recent full-length release, “Postcards from the Friendly City,” which was the third-most played album on WMNF 88.5 FM in 2010. With the release of “Postcards from the Friendly City,” Have Gun, Will Travel has secured national distribution through Denver, CO indie label Suburban Home Records. The album recently debuted at 72 on the CMJ Radio Top 200 and moved to 56 within 3 weeks on the chart. Have Gun, Will Travel will be appearing at Tinderbox Music’s Anniversary Party on March 17 (location TBA) during the SXSW Music Conference.

The Beauvilles: “Snow” won Best Music Video 2009 in the Sunscreen Film Festival. They were invited to play an official SXSW showcase in 2009 and 2010 and played CMJ each year, too. And thanks to constant touring, they’ve become one of the Southeast’s most recognized D.I.Y touring artists, travelling far and wide across the 48 states to play hundreds of shows and dozens of festivals. The Beauvilles will be appearing at Monster Nature’s unofficial showcase at The Liberty in East Austin (1618 1/2 East 6th Street) on March 17 during the SXSW conference.

The Human Condition: Their album “Life in Lines” got much-deserved attention on the CMJ chart and garnered praise as “a stellar example of the high quality music that the Tampa Bay area has to offer as well as a fine representation of The Human Condition’s undeniable talents.” (Creative Loafing, Jeff O’Kelley, 05/10). Their song “Godspeed” was selected as the lead character’s theme song in the movie “Beautiful Noise” shot in Sarasota in 2010; “Last Dance” is on the soundtrack, too. At last, one the area’s hardest working bands getting their due. The Human Condition will be appearing at Darwin’s Pub (223 East 6th Street) on March 17 in Austin during the SXSW conference.

Rebekah Pulley & the Reluctant Prophets: Tampa Bay’s perennial favorite just keeps getting better and better and the songs, excellent in sound and structure, keep pouring out. Four-time winner of a Creative Loafing “Best of the Bay” award, Rebekah has acquired a famous fan in Dave Marsh and appeared live on his Kick Out the Jamz show for Sirius Radio in 2010. Of her last album, he wrote “One of the most graceful records of the past several years. Pulley’s got a perfectly sinuous, utterly personal singing style … outstanding through and through” (Rock and Rap Confidential, Dave Marsh). Rebekah Pulley & the Reluctant Prophets will be playing at The G & S Lounge (2420 South First) @ 7:00 pm on Friday, March 18 and at Amelias (2213 S. 1st St.) @ 3:30 pm on Saturday, March 19 during the SXSW conference.

Ronny Elliott: Disproving his theory that the nice guy always finishes last, Ronny Elliott is gearing up for some well-deserved recognition. Washington DC’s Hungry For Music Records (HFM) is following-up their 2006 tribute to Peter Case with a tribute to Ronny and his amazing catalogue of songs. The to-be-titled double album will feature a variety of interpretations of 30 of Ronny’s songs by artists including Chuck Prophet, Jimmy LaFave, Johnny Dowd and Jon Dee Graham. The record is expected to be released sometime in 2012. Ronny will be appearing at The G & S Lounge (2420 South First) @ 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 19 during the SXSW conference.

Pack up the car and hit the road because this collection of 20 originals will make you want to drive all night. Unreleased treasures from Tampa Bay artists with established national followings (Ronny Elliott, Have Gun Will Travel, Rebekah Pulley, the Sleepy Vikings) share the lanes with up-and-coming favorites and a few new faces. Styles range from Americana to Indie, Pop, Reggae and Rock ‘n Roll.

Here’s everything you’d ever want to know about the songs on “Tales of Highways & Low Roads.” Click on the song title for musician credits, website links, contact info, videos and lyrics.

“A superb, judiciously chosen overview of the excellent, diverse music emerging from Southwest Florida. Roll down the windows, crank this up and fly down your favorite freeway.” —Wade Tatangelo, syndicated music writer/McClatchy Newspapers

About our cover

Feature Tracks: #1, #9, #10 (National add-date: April 5, 2011)

Track 1 “Time Machine” is a previously unreleased gem from Bradenton’s Have Gun, Will Travel. Maybe you recognize them from PBS’ “Roadtrip Nation,” or the commercials that just started running? No matter what, hear them once and you’ll long more.

Track 2 “California Diamonds” introduces the rest of the world to the sweet, heartfelt goodness that the six Grecian Urns dish out. With two pairs of siblings, they’re tight in song and by blood. The result is an “acoustic, folky version of Arcade Fire.” Creative Loafing

Track 3 “Twin Peaks” The ride’s been fast and furious for the Sleepy Vikings who were named one of the four best bands (out of 650) at NXNE 2011 by Paste magazine. They then scored a CMJ showcase, signed a deal with New Grenada Records and got an official SXSW showcase spot in 2011.

Track 4 “Baby Don’t Leave” The Vessenmeyers of Experimental Pilot might bicker like brothers and take forever with their creations, but this song is one of their best efforts ever, with its Beach Boy-esque break and perfect harmonies. unreleased

Track 5 “Drive On” Ricky Wilcox was still better known in Tampa Bay for Deloris Telescope when this song was first released. The driving beat hints of The Cars and its lyrics remind us of a time when waiting for a call meant sitting at home by the phone.

Track 6 “The Walk” Alexander & The Grapes offer up “a sweet and juicy wallop of pop, psychedelic and country.” tbt*

Track 7 “He Looked Up” With the addition of Lakeland’s Walking Catfish, BAAMO officially stakes claim on Polk County and hums along to the Catfish brand of quirky “old-fashioned indie rock.” Lakeland Ledger

Track 8 “Godspeed” It’s just a fact that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Here, Rebekah Pulley chimes in with Dean Johanesen and The Human Condition. The song is also featured in the movie, Beautiful Noise, filming now in Sarasota.

Track 9 “Driving Back in Time” Brand NEW from Ronny Elliott, a classic cruise featuring his favorite themes & characters, with Rebekah Pulley along for the ride to lend an echoing hand. unreleased

Track 10 “Hard Times” Perpetual favorites Rebekah Pulley & The Reluctant Prophets mix a sly sense of humor in this tender and otherwise sad tale. unreleased

Track 11 “Cuyahoga River Blues” He’s played it live to raves for awhile. Now Will Quinlan has finally shared this silky story and we are glad. unreleased

Track 12 “Driver” Wendy Rich went all the way to Nashville to find a band in Kevin McKendree’s DICK 50 able to keep up with her giant, happy voice. The result is an exuberant enticement to hit the road.

Track 13 “Man or Moon” Sarasota’s Sons of Hippies should be the next big CMJ breakout and this song should top CMJ “Best of” lists. College towns are clamoring for more after 2010 tours because this indie rocks.

Track 14 “White Line Fever” No Tampa Bay road song collection would be complete without this ultimate ode from the Mojo Gurus.

Track 15 “Airstream 13” Clever in construction and story, The Woeful Ones’ Brandon Ruck penned this catchy foot-tapping ditty long before our CD art was designed but they’re great lyrics for the photo. unreleased

Track 16 “Three Months in the Sand” There really is a Sergeant in Sarge and The Aeromen, although Mike Daley has risen in rank. But even an officer can make rollicking fun of a daily grind spent miles in air.

Track 17 “Home Again” The Hip Abduction’s big reggae-surf horns make sitting still impossible. Festival favorites for good reason.

Track 18 “Frozen Shadows” Clear, warm sound provides the perfect scaffolding for Bud Buckley’s floating voice.

Track 19 “Goin’ Home Again” The Briar Hill Band first recorded this song at the legendary Criteria in Miami. Reminds us of Florida’s original roots.

Track 20 “Train Song” William Whiting, Jr of Unpainted Souls is a virtuoso of all things stringed and virtually unknown, but not for long.

Performer bios:

Appearing at the Florida Bandango in Austin on March 16 but NOT at One for the Road,
Sleepy Vikings: The ride’s been fast and furious for the Sleepy Vikings who have taken their road show to epicenters of cool both north (Toronto for North by Northeast) and south (Athens GA for Popfest).

Local musician and WMNF programmer Ed Lehmann announces new compilation CD project. Entitled “This CD Kills Fascists,” in honor of folk legend Woody Guthrie, the CD will feature Florida artists doing original songs that speak to the issues of our times and will present a variety of musical styles to highlight the diversity of our local culture. A CD release party is scheduled for November 13, 2010 @ Skipper’s Smokehouse. The project is a fund-raiser for WMNF. If you want to submit a song for consideration, email an mp3 to: parsonbrown.e1@gmail.com.

This project was inspired by local bands who have recently produced songs about the Gulf oil disaster and the West Virginia mining accident. Songs may cover a variety of contemporary subjects — social, political, environmental. Submission deadline is September 7, 2010.
